Flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses, however they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, flu symptoms are worse than the common cold and include a fever. Flu symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue (tiredness). Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of flu and people with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose.
In decisions about school attendance, if you child feels ill check their temperature. If over 100 degrees F or 37.7 degrees C, please keep your child at home until he/she is fever free for 24 hours without medication such as tylenol or motrin. If your child is diagnosed with flu by the doctor, please call the school nurse at 353-7140.
