English as a New Language (ENL)

English as a New Language is a state and federally mandated program that provides intensive instruction and support to English Language Learners (ELLs) using ENL methodologies and techniques. The New York State Commissioner’s Regulation CR Part 154, outlines the specific procedures that must be followed to identify students as ELLs during their initial enrollment or re-entry into NYS schools. CR Part 154 also provides guidelines for the education of ELLs in New York State based on language proficiency levels. Those guidelines, or Units of Study, are used in the Nyack UFSD to provide ELLs with rigorous academic experiences that consider their individual strengths and needs. The goal of our ENL program is to support students as they become English proficient, building their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English while also developing academic content knowledge. Our students receive two types of ENL supports, depending on need and proficiency level:

• Integrated ENL: Students receive core content area areas (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and/or Mathematics) and English language development instruction including home language supports and appropriate ELL scaffolds.
• Stand-alone ENL: Students receive English language development instruction taught by a New York State certified ESOL teacher in order to acquire the English language needed for success in core content areas (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and/or Mathematics).
