Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

As you may have heard, the Board of Education voted on Tuesday, July 7, 2010 to close the campus for all students of freshman and sophomore standing at Nyack High School. This pilot program will go into effect in September, and will be reviewed at the end of October for further recommendation. This policy change now puts Nyack High School in compliance with neighboring districts. In fact, Nyack High School was the last school in the county to maintain an open campus policy of this kind.

The high school administration realizes that the Board’s decision to close the campus for September represents a major change in the culture of the high school, and that there are varying, passionate perspectives on the issue. The impetus behind the change, however, must remain the central focus: the safety of our students.

To ensure that this policy change is completely understood, and that any remaining questions or concerns can be addressed, I am inviting parents in for a discussion on the policy. There, you will have an opportunity to meet with the high school administration to hear more details about the policy change, and share your thoughts with us. This meeting will take place on Thursday, August 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the library. Should
you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 353-7101 or e-mail me at jspero@nyackschools.com . I thank you in advance for your understanding.

Respectfully,

Joseph Spero
Principal, Nyack High School
